How does a chamber press work?
Chamber presses are used for batch operation. Sludge with a dry solids content of up to 5% is pumped into the chambers by progressive cavity pumps or diaphragm pumps, with a pressure of up to 16 bar. The plates are held in place hydraulically, and by withstanding the pressure of the pumps thereby prevent the escape of sludge from the unit. The water in the sludge passes through the filter cloths and is discharged via filtrate channels. The solids are trapped and accumulate at the filter cloths.

The more the sludge is pumped into the unit then the more the existing cake is dewatered by the additional pressure, until the chambers are full. The dry solids in the sludge determine the quantity of sludge dewatered per batch.
However, trials have revealed that in comparison with filter belt presses and centrifuges, chamber presses achieve the highest results in the dry solids contents of cake.
